  • JDAM Drops Improve Warfighter Training At Rattlesnake Range

    The Camp Shelby Air-to-Ground Range can now accommodate an important component of realistic war fighter training it previously lacked. In March 2021, for the first time, inert Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) bombs were dropped at the range including Guided Bomb Unit (GBU) 31s and 38s. Range Operations Officer, Lt. Col. Doug Harwell says for decades the range, also known as the Rattlesnake Range, remained a relic of the Vietnam War era when it comes to meeting the war fighter training requirements. The Perry County site had long been not been suited for fourth generation aircraft like the F-16 and F-18.

    More than 20 members of the 175th Cyber Operations Group, Maryland Air National Guard, participated in Southern Strike 21 in various locations of Mississippi from April 14-29, 2021. Southern Strike is a large-scale, conventional and special operations exercise hosted by the Mississippi National Guard at the Gulfport Combat Readiness Training Center and other locations around the state.

  • Special Tactics Airmen participate in Southern Strike 2020

    For the first time, the 125th Special Tactics Squadron (STS), assigned to Portland Air National Guard Base, Oregon, was invited to participate in Southern Strike 2020 taking place in Gulfport, Miss. Jan. 30 through Feb. 13, 2020. Southern Strike 2020 is a large Joint Force exercise put on by the Air National Guard Bureau and is located at the Combat Readiness Training Center (CRTC) in Gulfport, Mississippi. This exercise provides special operators a unique training opportunity in a location that enables combat effectiveness by working with various Joint Task Force entities in Mississippi and the Gulf of Mexico.
